The Public Art Commission was recently appointed by City Council. There are
already several projects on tap for this commission. The Art Walk is a pedestrian-friendly
excursion proposed from Union Square to the SALT Block. Work has been completed
on sidewalks in the area, providing a continuous link in infrastructure. It
is anticipated that one of the first tasks of the new Commission will be to
commission a Master Art Plan for the City. Another project that is already
budgeted for is an artist's work for the Ridgeview Library. Separate and apart
from the new Public Art Commission is the Millennium Art Committee. This committee
was created by Council for the purpose of following through on a piece of public
art to commemorate the "Miracle of Hickory", the establishment of an emergency
polio hospital in Hickory in June of 1944.
