This is the Seal of the City
of Hickory, North Carolina. The Latin phrase "vestiga nulla retrorsum" means "no
steps backward," and symbolizes the progressive thinking which
the City has always had.
The City of Hickory was incorporated
in 1870 as Hickory Tavern. The log cabin represents the first
building in Hickory, which was a stagecoach stop where people
rested on their journey.
The furniture business became
popular in Hickory because there was wood in the nearby mountains
that was transported to Hickory where it was turned into furniture
and shipped via railroad. Hickory also became famous for its
hosiery industries.
More than 125 years later,
the City of Hickory is the banking, commercial, medical, and
transportation services hub of a 350,000 metropolitan area with
about 35,000 of those people living in the Hickory City Limits.
Hickory is still famous for its furniture and hosiery industries,
and now is known for its communications industries, which produce
much of the world’s supply of fiber optic cable.
