The City of Hickory's Planning and Development Department is responsible for overseeing the physical development of the City of Hickory.  The departments primary functions involve land use planning, development review, community development, redevelopment, and economic development.
 
The city has recently updated its Hickory by Choice Comprehensive Plan and the Land Development Code. The revised Land Development Code went into effect on February 1, 2011. See below for more information.
 
 
The department also staffs a number of boards and commissions which include the Hickory Regional Planning Commission, Community Appearance Commission, Historic Preservation Commission, Public Art Commission, Citizen's Advisory Commission, Brownfield Advisory Group, and the Youth Council.
