Junior Law Enforcement and Recreation Training Academy

Since June 2009, the Hickory Police and Parks and Recreation departments have combined resources to implement a free program for area youth. The main objective of the program is to generate a structured learning environment which allows cadets to positively interact with law enforcement. The program is uniquely designed to mirror a basic law enforcement training academy. Each cadet must adhere to a strict dress code policy. Each day begins with the Pledge of Allegiance, a review of academy rules and core values, followed by physical fitness training. The training days also include a hands-on overview of police operations, with particular focus on specialized units such as Criminal Investigations and Traffic units. For example, cadets are required to investigate a mock crime scene, collect evidence, and present his or her findings. The first week of the program will be held Tuesday, June 21, 2011 through Thursday, June 23, 2011 and will finish Tuesday, June 28, 2011 through Thursday, June 30, 2011.  Forms required for participation are the application, medical release form, written submission form, risk and release agreement, dress code form, and schedule of daily activities.  ALL application packets must be returned no later than Friday, June 3, 2011, to: Hickory Police Department, Attn: Sgt Ericka Heath, Community Services,  347 2nd Ave SW, Hickory, NC 28602.
