E-Government (E-Gov)
The increasing role of
technology in government will enable us to further expand our customer
service to citizens, visitors and businesses. Through the use of
technology, city services will become more accessible, more flexible
and more efficient. This will enable government to connect with citizens
24 hours a day, seven days a week. No longer will citizens have to
wait until City offices "open" to conduct routine business
and to interact with City staff. In addition, technology will enable
us to provide user-friendly access to City Hall. Customers will be
able to contact us from a single point of entry and will not need
detailed knowledge of the organization in order to get their task/transaction
accomplished. Transactions that used to require a trip to City Hall,
visits to several departments and possibly a return visit will in
the future take only minutes to complete from the comfort of citizens
home or office.
The City of Hickorys
vision for e-government is to take full advantage of the communications
and information technologies that the internet provides to enhance
services to our citizens and customers. e-Government will enhance
our current service delivery methods, not replace them. Our City
Web portal will provide information, transactions and communications
to our customers. Moving transactions to web-based processes will
also give us the opportunity to redesign existing processes with
a focus on the end-user. In keeping with our Total Quality Management
philosophy, we will continually evaluate our e-Government program
to determine if we are meeting our customers requirements.
We will develop processes that integrate customer transactions
with our internal systems, at the same time protecting customer
privacy and systems security. We will also use available technologies
to improve communication within our organization.
Some possible
applications/features include: water/sewer bill payments on-line,
access and download Police accident reports, pay parking tickets
via our web site, registration and payment of recreation activities,
provide meaningful links to other agencies (county, state, schools,
etc.), GIS (Geographic Information Systems) maps for zoning, ward
information, etc., and much more.
