 ¨        A Neighborhood in the City of Hickory is defined for purposes of establishing a neighborhood association to be a self-identified, geographic area organized by those who share common characteristics and concerns.

 ¨      Neighborhood Associations are group organized for self-improvement that are open to all residents and property owners in the neighborhood.

 ¨      Neighborhood Associations provide a forum for grassroots problem solving, communications and coordination of neighborhood improvement projects.

 ¨      Neighborhoods strive to provide a vehicle for neighbors to work proactively on improvements.

 ¨      Neighborhood Associations provide a structure to organize volunteers and is an official entity to access the City for assistance with neighborhood projects.

 ¨      Neighborhood Associations can also serve to generate funds from fundraisers, dues or donations.

 ¨      An association can help bring people together. It can sponsor block parties, social events, or holiday celebrations. This type of involvement helps give identity to the neighborhood.

 ¨      Each association is responsible for setting its own boundaries, identifying residents in the neighborhood and scheduling meetings.

 ¨      City staff acts as liaisons to assist with meeting details, agendas, minutes and other communication. Staff also contacts speakers to come to the neighborhood meetings for presentations.
