On Monday, May 9 the Unifour Senior Games, an athletic and artistic event for seniors age 55 and better, will celebrate 27 years of fun, fellowship and fitness. The Opening Ceremonies of this year's games will be held at the Highland Recreation Center (1451 8th Street Drive, NE, Hickory) beginning at 9:30 a.m.

 

A Parade of Participants, torch run, a welcome by Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright and many other special elements are planned for the ceremonies. Hal Row, host of First Talk on 1290, WHKY-AM will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.

 

Following the Opening Ceremonies a one-mile fun walk will be held. Additional events held Monday will be table tennis, football throw, softball throw, spincasting and basketball shoot. The day will end with an awards ceremony.

 

The Unifour Senior Games will continue through May 20th with many different events held throughout the Unifour Area. This year more then 700 seniors from Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties are participating in one of the largest local games in North Carolina.

 

Athletic events include track and field, tennis, golf, table tennis, swimming, billiards and many more. Team sports include 3 on 3 basketball and softball. Artistic categories include Literary Arts, Performing Arts, Heritage Arts and Visual Arts.

The Games are coordinated by the Hickory, Lenoir, Morganton and Newton Parks and Recreation Departments, as well as the Western Piedmont Council of Governments Area Agency on Aging.
