Hickory Fire Department

MAINTENANCE DIVISION

The mechanical/maintenance division is staffed with two full-time mechanics with the responsibility of keeping 34 fire department apparatus and support units on line 24 hours a day. Other duties include annual service testing of pumps, aerial ladder certification, annual hose testing, self-contained breathing apparatus maintenance, and ground ladder testing. Maintenance is actively involved in apparatus, equipment, and vehicle specification writing.

MAINTENANCE FACILITY

The Fire Department Maintenance Facility  is located behind Station #5 at 1425 21st Street Drive SE.  The phone number there is (828) 323-7512.

This 5,342 square foot structure opened November 1, 2001.  The layout of the building includes two drive-through bays; one with a service pit complete with ventilation system, lubricant and oil reels, a waste oil transfer pump and under vehicle lighting. The second bay allows apparatus to be driven in from the west side and from the east side of the same garage bay, a 15,000-pound hydraulic vehicle lift system for servicing light to medium duty vehicles.

One of the most impressive features is the headroom in the garage area. In performing maintenance on the aerial apparatus, the aerial ladder above the cab can be raised and then raise the cab to perform some of the basic maintenance without being outside. The vehicle service bays are connected to a work area where brake components, transmissions even engines could be completely reworked.

The work area incorporates an area for welding, tool room storage for mobile mechanic toolboxes, floor jacks, and portable equipment storage. Also on the main floor is a room dedicated to storing all the required vehicle oils, grease, and transmission fluids. Integrated into this room are air pumps that pump the fluids to the various hose reel locations at service areas in the garage. The pump and oil system provide a sealed system of recovering all waste fluids and for dispensing new fluids.
