Responsible for Hickory’s computerized traffic signal system operations, designing and preparing plans, specifications, and estimates for traffic signals and improvements to intersection geometrics. Duties include preparing and deploying traffic signal timing plans; evaluating and optimizing traffic signal and system operations; performing periodic inspection of signalized intersections; aiding in resolving traffic signal control problems and assisting city traffic engineer in capital and operating budget preparation and program and personnel administration. Requires a thorough knowledge of traffic signal timing software such as SYNCHRO/SimTraffic, MUTCD and NCDOT design practices, and Intelligent Transportation Systems concepts. Also requires working knowledge of AutoCAD software and microcomputer programs including MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). Successful candidate must have the ability to work with other engineering groups, City staff, contractors, the public and other agencies such as NCDOT and possess the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in Civil Engineering or closely related field. The preferred applicant will have EI with the ability to obtain registration as PE in North Carolina. Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license with a good driving record.

*GANG OF ONE COORDINATOR
POLICE

Under general supervision, provides coordinated and directed services for a gang prevention and intervention initiative for Hickory Police Department. The Gang of One Coordinator will partner with citizens, local, state and federal agencies to prevent youth from joining gangs, while supporting the youth being pressured to join gangs and assist youth in getting out of gangs. This position’s primary focus is supporting the Gang of One Hotline through referral assignment and follow ups, call documentation, database set up, volunteer management, resource outreach, reporting and educating the community of gang trends. The coordinator will also assist with the support and development of Gang of One initiatives while working directly with volunteers, Street Crime Interdiction Unit Officers and community-based agencies. The coordinator will work with outside agency partners to establish a multi-disciplinary intervention team(s) for the purposes of comprehensive resource support for gang involved youth. The coordinator’s work will also include program analysis and preparation of recommendations and reports. The coordinator will collect, complete, organize, analyze, and interpret information for periodic and special reports; draft reports on current operations, programs, proposals and procedures, and perform special assignments. The coordinator position is funded for one year or the life of the grant. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in criminal justice, sociology, psychology or related field preferred. Applicants with an associate’s degree and experience in the related field will be considered. A preferred applicant would have experience and/or knowledge of law enforcement administration, the criminal justice systems processes, administrative work, program administration and service of public/non profit environment. Applicants must be a minimum of 20 years old and possess a valid North Carolina Class “C” drivers license. Applicant must successfully complete a through background investigation and must not have been convicted of a felony.

*POLICE OFFICER

Patrols (on foot or in patrol car) an assigned area in business and residential sections to preserve general order; directs traffic and enforces law; operates speed detection device (radar); performs other police related duties as required. EDUCATION: Applicants must submit either a copy of high school diploma indicating completion of high school or certified copy of GED test results. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of general certification from the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission; pass physical examination and other examinations; prefer applicants with good knowledge of laws and ordinances relating to arrest, search and seizure, traffic control and modern police practices; radio communications and apprehension of criminals; prefer applicants with some knowledge of Hickory street systems; minimum age of twenty years; applicants must not have been convicted of a felony and must undergo a thorough background investigation; weight must be in proportion to height; possession of valid Class "C" driver's license from NC. APPLICANTS MUST HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED NC BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOOL AND MUST PROVIDE COPY OF DIPLOMA WITH NUMBER OF HOURS.

*POLICE OFFICER TRAINEE

Once hired, a Police Officer Trainee must attend and successfully complete the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training and acquire a probationary North Carolina General Certification. After becoming certified, an employee in this position patrols (on foot or in patrol car) an assigned area in a business or residential section to preserve general order; directs traffic and enforces laws; operates speed detection device (radar); performs other police related duties as required. EDUCATION: Applicants must submit either a copy of high school diploma indicating completion of high school or certified copy of GED test results. Preferred applicant will have minimum of a two-year degree or special language skills. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Minimum age of 20; meet or exceed the minimum standards required by the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission; successfully pass the Police Officer Physical Ability Test and other examinations or tests as required; possession of valid Class "C" driver's license from NC. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony and must undergo a thorough background investigation. Applicants should not be currently enrolled in Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). APPLICANTS MUST SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE NC BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT SCHOOL, RECEIVE PROBATIONARY NC GENERAL CERTIFICATION WITHIN 60 DAYS OF COMPLETION OF BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING AND MUST PROVIDE COPY OF DIPLOMA WITH NUMBER OF HOURS.

PART TIME POSITION

Duty hours vary Monday through Thursday 2:00 to 6:30 p.m. and some Fridays. Supervises and interacts with At-risk middle school students in after school programs. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Willingness and know-how to participate in games (indoor/outdoor, active/inactive), art classes, sciences classes, gymnastics, dance, karate, tutoring and quiet times. Will assist Site Supervisor in planning during bi-weekly staff meetings; serve as a positive role model to middle school students through actions, words and behavior while at work or while interacting with students. Willingness to help children with homework and participate in special events or activities completed away from the centers and possibly after regular hours. Also, the individual will be responsible for collecting and maintaining student data and other documentation requirements. The individual will be responsible for driving a van to pick up children after school. Desire to be a friend and mentor to middle school students. Minimum age of 18. Must possess a valid Class "C" driver's license from N.C.
