Get a Clue @ Your Library Hannah Owen Get ready, get set, and go to the Hickory Public Library to sign your children up for the 2007 summer reading program, “Get a Clue @ Your Library.” Your library has planned free educational and fun activities for all age children to keep them occupied and to encourage them to read or listen to books. Your children’s teachers will be delighted if you bring your children to the public library over the summer break. Teachers can tell you that students must read over the summer to maintain or increase their reading skills. Many parents tell me that the library’s summer program is what got their children interested in reading. And studies show that the best preparation for entering kindergarten is for someone to read regularly to a child. Children ages 0-18 can participate. Children or parents keep a record of the library books children read or have read to them. Teens can read books and post short book reviews on the library website. The Friends of the Library, the Hickory Crawdads, McDonalds, and Bob Evans restaurants have generously provided incentives. You must register at either library to participate. Special summer events start on Tuesday June 12 th at 10:30 at the Ridgeview Branch, and at 2:30 at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library with “The Balloon Lady.” She will entertain with stories, humor, and balloon creations. This show is suitable for all ages. At least one special event has been planned for school age children each week. Programs include the Bright Star Children’s Theatre, Mountain Marionettes, magician Bill Grimsley, and recording star Timmy Abell. Teens 12 and up can attend an “Art of Henna” program on June 13 th at 3:00 and a “Chocolate Lovers” program on July 26 th at 2:30. Our regular preschool programs continue all summer: Babytime (Thursday at 10), Sing and Play for toddlers (Tuesday at 10 and 11) at Patrick Beaver, and Preschool Storytime (Monday at 10 at Ridgeview and Wednesday at 11 at Patrick Beaver). In addition, there will be an evening Family Stories and Craft on Monday evenings at 6:30 at Patrick Beaver. Local resident and native speaker Rachel Dick will present a Spanish language storytime Thursdays at 11:00. The Hickory Public Library is a department of the City of Hickory.
