HEY TEENS! Are you having romantic problems? Is school getting you down? Do your parents drive you crazy? Are your friends acting weird? Do you deal with all your problems by writing about them?
If you are a teen who likes to write, I have a special invitation just for you. Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is now the host of a monthly writing group for teenagers, ages twelve to eighteen. One Saturday each month, teens from all over the county meet at the library to share and critique their creative work. We want you to come, too!
Teen Writing Group (TWG) members bring several pieces of writing they want to share, which can be poems, short stories, essays, or whatever. Group members then offer comments and suggestions for improvement. Our goals are to share our creativity and to improve our writing skills, as well as offer friendship and support to each other. Being a teen is tough, and we want to help you find an outlet for your feelings through creative writing.
In addition to reading and discussing your work, you will also receive help from library staff member Tamara Kraus (that’s me!) and high school English teacher Mr. Chris Rice. Mr. Rice is the advisor for the Hickory High School literary club and magazine and regularly attends TWG meetings. As the library staff coordinator, I lead the meetings and distribute information regarding journaling, publishing, and anything else the teens need to expand their creative outlets.
The TWG recently started a blog at www.pbml.teenwrite.blogspot.com, or just log on to our website at www.hickorygov.com/library and click on “Teen Scene.” You must be a member of the blog to post, so email me at tkraus@ci.hickory.nc.us, and I will send you an invitation to join.
The next TWG meeting is Saturday, February 16th at 2:30 in the library meeting room. Bring at least one or two pieces of writing to share. You do not have to read your work aloud. Snacks will be provided.
Hickory Public Library is a department of the City of Hickory. We are open Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Ridgeview Branch Library is closed on Sunday.
