Hart Square

The 1840 Carolina Village

Photo of house with haystack in front

Privately owned by Dr. and Mrs. Robert Hart

Graphic of heart in square

Hart Square began in 1967 with the purchase of a tract of land bought with the purpose of establishing a wildlife refuge and a retreat from a busy family practice.  The 200 acres that make up Hart Square are totally fenced to protect the fallow deer herd on the property.  There are also five ponds for ducks and geese.

The village has been reconstructed with original log buildings from the surrounding area.  Each was disassembled, moved, and then restored exactly as it originally stood.

In addition to the care taken in the restoration of each building, original boards, doors, hardware, windows and primitive furnishings have been used when possible to give the true appearance of the life of Catawba County settlers during the early 19th century.

Hart Square is only open to the public on the fourth Saturday of October each year.  On that day, craftsmen and artisans demonstrate the way of life in the 1840's.

Tickets are available through the Catawba County Historical Association in Newton, NC.
All proceeds from the day go to charity.
