Pleasant surroundings in the Boyd Family Room.
THE BOYD FAMILY GENEALOGY / LOCAL HISTORY ROOM
at the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is designed to offer resources for those
who have an interest in researching the areas of local history and genealogy. An
extensive collection of volumes pertaining to historical records of North
Carolina and the local area is supplemented by collections of maps, microfilm,
CDs, and clippings from local newspapers.
The history of
the City of Hickory, Catawba County, and the surrounding area is laid out in a
variety of resources. Making scrapbooks of newspaper clippings was a past-time
undertaken by some of Hickory's citizens. These scrapbooks afford us a window
into the past, when the city was just forming its identity. The minutes of local
organizations offer insight into activities of a less hectic age, but one in
which community involvement was as important as it is today. Several works are
recollections of former residents, who recall the contributions of Hickory and
Catawba County residents, the rascals as well as the upright, the common folk as
well as the gentlemen and gentle ladies. Histories of Catawba County and other
North Carolina localities are available in the history section.
Collections of
official records of the War Between the States and other events affecting the
lives of North Carolinians are available to the interested reader. The North
Carolina Manual provides a source for the workings of the government of North
Carolina.
For those
interested in finding out about their roots, the Boyd Family Room is a good
place to go. Before you begin your search, you may want to get all the
information you can from family members, including names, dates of important
events such as births, deaths, and marriages. Once you have a good foundation of
information, you can use the resources of the Boyd Family Room to expand your
knowledge of your family history. There are census records, including census on
microfilm for all North Carolina counties for all censuses (with just a few
exceptions). Soundex files on microfilm have recently been added to facilitate
your searches. Resources in the Boyd Family Room can be accessed on the
computerized card catalog available on computers throughout the library and in
the room. Internet access is available in the Boyd Family Room on two computer
stations. One computer station is dedicated to the use of CD-Roms.
The room is open
during the same hours as the main library. Make a visit to the Boyd Family
Genealogy / Local History Room part of your next library experience.
