Hickory Public Library Completes
First Year in New Facility

On January 11, 1998, the City of Hickory celebrated the grand opening of the Hickory Public Library System's new main facility, the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library, on the SALT Block. A huge crowd including city officials, special guests, library donors, library patrons, and several thousand interested area residents attended the much-awaited event. The opening marked the fulfillment of a vision to upgrade the outdated and outgrown Elbert Ivey Memorial Library in order to provide area residents with a state of the art facility that includes the latest technology, improved collections and services, and expanded programming.

One year later the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library has seen an overwhelming response from the community and the library has continued to expand and improve its services, as it settles into its new home. Library Director Philip Cherry commented, " This year library staff have experienced double and triple digit growth in numerous statistical categories. The newly created Library Foundation will have its first impact in the coming year when interest money will be available to enhance programming and collections."
