Hickory Public Library Celebrates Black History Month

Black History Month events are scheduled at Hickory Public Library with programs for children and adults.  Ridgeview Branch Library joins Catawba Valley Community College in sponsoring a weeklong celebration. Events will take place at CVCC and Ridgeview Branch Library with special displays available at Ridgeview and Patrick Beaver Memorial Libraries.  All programs are free and open to the public.

The week's festivities begin on Monday, February 21st when Dr. Reginald Watson of East Carolina University will be the guest of the library's Sojourner Truth Book Club at 6:30 p.m. at Ridgeview Branch Library.  Dr. Watson will present a talk titled "The Deconstruction and Reconstruction of Motherhood and Manhood in Toni Morrison's Beloved and Alice Walker's Third Life of Grange Copeland."

On Thursday, February 24th the public is invited to the celebration event at CVCC at 7:00 p.m.  The event features music, refreshments, Black Leader Recognition, poetry contest awards, and keynote speaker Theodis Beck, Secretary for the North Carolina Department of Correction. Beck's talk "The Road to Success" includes themes of giving back to your community and the importance of knowing who you are through education.

Poetry contest participants and winners will be honored at a reception at Ridgeview Branch Library on Saturday, February 26th at 2:00 p.m.  Contestants from elementary school through college will attend and winners in each category will read their poems. The Friends of Ridgeview Branch Library will serve refreshments.  The public is invited to attend.

Throughout the month of February both libraries will have Black History Month displays that feature a variety of materials of interest - adult and children's books, fiction and nonfiction selections, videos, audio books and CD's.

Ridgeview Branch Library is located at 706 1st Street SW and Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is located at 375 3rd Street NE on the SALT Block.  For information about programs call the Ridgeview Branch at 345-6037.
