Summer Book Club for Young Readers Offered at Hickory Public Library

Students entering Kindergarten through second grade are invited to a special summertime book club at Hickory Public Library. Based on the Summer Reading Program theme, “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales,” the book club will explore a variety of books. Each session will include book discussion, book related activities and refreshments. The K-2 Book Club will meet on Mondays from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library, starting June 12 th.

The book club will share books for beginning readers, including the Henry and Mudge series, Dr. Seuss, and others. Each week book club coordinator Tamara Kraus will read a book and then participants will choose a book to take home and read for the next meeting. Each reader will be able to tell others about their books each week.

Also included are fun book-related activities, talk about how books are made, learning about various children's authors, and making books. Each week participants will create 2-3 pictures of the books that were shared, or write a story of their own, and at the end of the summer they will have their very own handmade book!

The purpose of the book club is to encourage reading over the summer break, improve reading skills, and explore different kinds of literature. Right now the club is called K-2 Book Club, but one of the first things participants will do is choose a name for their club.

For information call 304-0500 ext. 249. Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is located at 375 3 rd Street NE on the SALT Block.
