Library Kicks Off Summer Reading Program With Puppets and Plays

Come join the fun as Hickory Public Library kicks off its Summer Reading Program with two special events for families and children. On Sunday, June 11 th the whole family can enjoy a special performance of “Aesop’s Fables” by Bright Star Children’s Theatre at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library at 3:00 p.m. Children are invited to Ridgeview Branch Library’s opening program at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13 th featuring the Grey Seal Puppets. The performance of “Tangle of Tales” will be at Ridgeview Recreation Center. Both events are free and open to the public.

"Aesop's Fables" have been celebrated throughout the world for their unique ability to educate through the antics of a variety of animals.  Join Bright Star’s professional actors as they take you on a trip you will long remember!  "The Tortoise and the Hare," "The Lion and the Mouse," "The Monkey and his Shadow," "The Bird and the Pitcher" and the "Boy who cried Wolf" all come to life in a hilariously entertaining production.  You will have a blast joining the actors on-stage to fill in for absent sheep--while learning quite a few things about life in the process. This performance will be repeated for Ridgeview Branch Library on Tuesday, June 20 th at 10:00 a.m.

“Tangle of Tales” is a taste of the familiar and a touch of the new. Three favorite folk tales from around the world come to life in this imaginative creation of the Grey Seal Puppets. See "The Frog Prince" from Germany, "Three Billy Goats Gruff" from Scandinavia and "The Three Little Pigs" from England. Each story is told in a different style using a variety of puppets. Along with these familiar tales there is a whole menagerie of zany characters: a skinny ant dances a lively jig; "block heads" learn how to get around; and the zaniest creatures of all, the "Wobblies," open the show with an extraordinary ballet.

All area children are invited to attend the Kick-off and to sign up for the Summer Reading Program for children 0 – 18. Registration is ongoing and special events, activities, and storytimes continue through August 9 th.
