“Let’s Talk About It” Book Discussion SeriesScheduled at Hickory Public Library
Hickory Public Library has again been selected by the North Carolina Humanities Council to receive a $1,000 grant for the book discussion program “Let’s Talk About It.” The popular program is offered each fall at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library featuring a different topic and series of books. The theme for this year’s series is “Mad Women in the Attic”. The program is scheduled for Thursday evenings on Sept. 7 th, and 21 st, Oct 5 th, and 19 th, and Nov. 2 nd at 7:00 p.m. The program is free and open to the public, however pre-registration is required beginning August 17th. Teacher certification renewal credit is available through this program. “Let’s Talk About It” combines the pleasure of reading books with the experience of sharing ideas with scholars and fellow readers. After participants read a book, a visiting scholar talks about the book and author in the context of the theme. Participants then have the opportunity to share their thoughts and viewpoints during a discussion lead by the scholar. The books chosen for this year’s series are: “Jayne Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte, “Sula” by Toni Morrison, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “Surfacing” by Margaret Atwood, and “Wide Sargasso Sea” by Jean Rhys. Discussion leaders include five scholars from western North Carolina: Merritt Moseley from UNCA; Joseph Bathanti from ASU; Suzanne Jeffers, Lenoir-Rhyne College, retired; Charles McAllister from Catawba College; and Lorena Russell from UNCA. Janice Knotts, coordinator of the program at the library, said, “Funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council helps us to provide this outstanding program each year. No matter what the theme, each year participants find this program to be educational, informative, and mind stretching, but mostly it is enjoyable – a great way to spend an evening.” The North Carolina Humanities Council is a nonprofit foundation and state-based affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities dedicated to promoting free public programming in the humanities across North Carolina. To register for the program contact Janice Knotts at 304-0500 ext. 228 or register in person at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library beginning August 17th. Upon registration, participants will receive the book for the Sept. 7 th program. Subsequent books will be handed out at each session and books for the current session will be collected. Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is located at 375 3 rd Street NE on the SALT Block. |
