Hickory Public Library Friends Elected to State Offices

Two board members of The Friends of Hickory Public Library were recently elected to serve as officers of the Friends of North Carolina Public Libraries (FONCPL). Alice Spuller was elected president of the Stare Friends Organization and Bill Oelkers will serve as treasurer.

Spuller and Oelkers have been longtime members of The Friends of Hickory Public Library. Both have served on the Friends Board. Spuller, who is currently vice-president of the local Friends group, has held several offices in the organization, including president. Oelkers has been treasurer of Hickory Friends for several years and has chaired the Friends’ Annual Book Sale.

FONCPL is a statewide organization that promotes excellent public library service by encouraging and assisting the formation and development of local Friends of the Library groups. The organization publishes a newsletter and holds workshops across the state to foster interchange of ideas and enthusiasm between Friends groups.

Friends of Hickory Public Library is dedicated to the support and stewardship of Hickory’s library system. The group provides volunteer and financial support to Patrick Beaver Memorial and Ridgeview Branch Libraries. It raises additional money for library materials, equipment and programs, especially those affecting children. Their donations allow the library to purchase items and present programs that are not included in its regular budget.

For information about the Friends or membership opportunities, call Janice Knotts at the library at 304-0500 ext. 228.
