Friends of Hickory Public Library Announces
National Library Week Bookmark Contest

The Friends of Hickory Public Library is sponsoring its annual bookmark contest for children in grades K – 8. The contest is part of the library’s celebration of National Library Week. All area children are invited to participate through either Patrick Beaver Memorial Library or Ridgeview Branch Library. A winner will be chosen from grades K – 2, 3 – 5, and 6 - 8 and their bookmarks will be printed and used as the library’s official bookmark for distribution during the coming year. A selection of the best bookmark entries will be on display at both libraries during National Library Week in April. This year’s bookmark theme is “Come Together @ Your Library”.

Mary Ann Crane, Friends’ Bookmark Contest Chairman said, “Previous entries have been so creative that we can’t wait to see this year’s bookmarks. The imagination and artwork of even the youngest participants delights us.” She added, “Each year participation has increased and we hope even more children in Catawba County will participate through their schools, scout troops, youth organizations, or from home.”

Entry forms and contest rules may be picked up at either library branch. The Friends have also sent information about the contest to area public and private schools, homechoolers, and youth organizations. Information is also available on the library’s website at www.hickorygov.com/library/. Entries must be received by March 16 th and the winners will be announced during National Library Week.

National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and local libraries across the country each April. This year’s celebration is scheduled for April 15-21. The week offers a time to celebrate the contributions of our libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. Hickory Public Library celebrates each year with special programs and events, including the bookmark contest for children and youth.

The Friends of Hickory Public Library is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers who are dedicated to providing support and service to the library through financial and volunteer assistance. Friends raise the majority of their money through membership fees and their used book sales. They use their funds to co-sponsor the annual Summer Reading Program, guest authors and speakers, and to purchase materials and equipment for the library. Membership is open to anyone interested in supporting Friends’ activities and goals.

For information about the bookmark contest come to either branch of the library or call 304-0500 ext. 249 or 345-6037. Patrick Beaver Memorial Library is located at 375 3 rd Street NE on the SALT Block and the Ridgeview Branch is at 706 1 st Street SW.
