Big Read Program Scheduled at Ridgeview Branch Library
Dr. Reginald Watson, East Carolina University professor, will be the guest speaker at Ridgeview Branch Library in Hickory for a special Big Read program. He will discuss TheBig Read selection, The Color of Water: A Black Man’s Tribute to His White Mother by James McBride. The free program is open to the public and is scheduled for Monday, March 19 th at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Watson will share his thoughts about McBride’s book and his writing. He will offer insight into the racial and cultural themes in the book. His discussion and analysis will include audience participation. Dr. Watson teaches undergraduate and graduate classes at East Carolina University in African-American and world literature. He is co-founder and director of the student dramatic group, East Carolina University Thespians of Diversity, and serves as advisor to the minority magazine, Expressions. He is a board member of the Ledonia Wright African-American Cultural Center, and member of the Black Faculty and Staff Organization. Watson holds a B.A. from North Carolina Central University and a M.A. from East Carolina University. He received his Ph.D. in English, Literature, and Criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of numerous publications, including three plays, which have been performed since 1993. This program is made possible by a grant for The Big Read from the North Carolina Humanities Council.
