Hickory Public Library will host the St. Joseph Irish Dancers in a special performance to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The group of young people, aged 5 to 16, will perform at the Arts & Science Center Auditorium on Thursday, March 15 th at 4:00 p.m. Put on your green and tap your feet to the jigs, reels, and hornpipes of the St. Joseph Dancers. The program is free and open to the public. The dance troupe, under the direction of Meg Barrett, was originally organized in 1996. It now includes young people from Hickory, Newton/Conover and neighboring communities. Their jigs and reels and slip jigs are performed in soft shoes called “ghillies”. Treble jigs and hornpipes are danced in the Irish hard shoe, made famous by “Riverdance”. The group also performs Irish Ceili Dance, similar to American square dancing.
