Popular Children’s Author Featured In Library Week Celebration Gloria Houston, award winning children’s author, will be the featured guest for children during National Library Week at Hickory Public Library. Meet the author of many of your favorite books and join the fun on Monday, April 16 th at 4:00 p.m. at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library. The free program is open to individuals and groups and is appropriate for school age children. Due to the author’s health issues, those attending are asked to wear no perfume, scented hairspray, or scented body products of any kind. Ms. Houston’s writes Appalachian children’s stories. Many are about her family and this part of the country where she was raised. Her popular books include: Bright Freedom’s Song, Littlejim’s Dream, Littlejim’s Gift, Mountain Valor, But No Candy, My Great Aunt Arizona, Litteljim, and The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree. Her first book, My Brother Joey Died, was nominated for an ALA Notable Book Award. Since then her books have won more than 40 national awards and one international award. She received the 1990 Distinguished Alumni Award from Appalachian State University, the Forever-Young Author Award, the Women Helping Women Art/Humanities Award and the National Literacy Award. She also served as the Associate Producer in the film adaptation of her book, The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree. During her visit to Hickory, the library is taking Ms. Houston to Oakwood Elementary School for two special programs. The Friends of Hickory Public Library are co-sponsoring Ms. Houston’s visit to Hickory. Waldenbooks will have books for sale at the library event and generously donate a portion of the sales to the library for future programming.
