Puppets to Perform Folktale at Hickory Public Library

Asheville based puppeteer Pamella O’Connor returns to Hickory Public Library with a special National Library Week performance of “Vasilisa! The Russian Cinderella”. The free performance for families and children age 4 and up is scheduled for Sunday, April 15 th at 3:00 p.m. at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library. The library is located at 375 3 rd Street NE on the SALT Block.

“Vasalisa” is an intriguing Russian folktale that combines the art forms of puppetry and storytelling to create a uniquely warm and intimate theatrical experience for the entire family. Vasalisa is a young girl who is bequeathed a "magic" doll by her dying mother to guide her when she is lost or unsure. When her father marries again, she is sent deep into the woods by her wicked stepfamily to seek fire from the mythical witch Baba Yaga. Vasalisa passes the tests set before her and in the process learns to trust herself.

This performance is a slightly different kind of puppet theater than audiences are accustomed to seeing. The show is performed on a table top with the storyteller/puppeteer in full view.

Pamella O'Connor has been a professional theatre artist for 28 years. Trained as an actor first, she has produced, directed and performed traditional as well as puppet theatre, and toured throughout the United States and Europe performing original puppet theatre pieces. In 1999 Ms. O’Connor was the first performing artist to appear in the prestigious Spoleto and Piccolo Spoleto Theater Series in the same year.

For information call the library at 304-0500 ext. 249.
