Author and Entertainer Clyde EdgertonTo Make Hickory Appearance
North Carolina author, humorist and entertainer Clyde Edgerton will be in Hickory for a free performance on Friday, May 11 th at 7:00 p.m. at Hickory Community Theatre. Sponsored by Hickory Public Library, Hickory Community Theatre and Friends of Hickory Library, the public is invited to a laugh filled evening of stories, tales, and songs with one of North Carolina’s beloved storytellers. No tickets or reservations are necessary – seating is first come, first seated – doors open at 6:00 p.m. The evening event includes Edgerton’s “one man show”, a question and answer period, book sale and book signing, and a reception with cash bar. Waldenbooks will provide books for sale, donating a portion of the sales to the library for future programming. Following Edgerton’s appearance, Hickory Community Theatre will present a production of Edgerton’s Walking Across Egypt from May 18 th through June 3 rd. Tickets will be available on May 11 th or call 328-2283 for reservations. Edgerton is the author of eight popular novels: Raney, Walking Across Egypt, The Floatplane Notebooks, Killer Diller, In Memory of Junior, Redeye, Where Trouble Sleeps, and Lunch at the Picadilly. His non-fiction book is a memoir of his flying years called Solo: My Adventures in the Air. Several of his books have been adapted as plays and movies. Recognition of his work has included a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Lyndhurst Fellowship, the North Carolina Award for Literature, a Distinguished Alumni Award from UNC Chapel Hill Education Department, and five notable book awards from The New York Times. His talent for bringing his writings to life in readings has made him a popular performer and entertainer. Edgerton was born in Durham, NC and then lived in the small community of Bethesda, on the outskirts of the city. He was an only child, but even though his immediate family was small, he lived near a total of 23 aunts and uncles and many cousins. His mother’s family were primarily cotton farmers and his father’s family grew tobacco. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in English from UNC Chapel Hill, Edgerton entered the U.S. Air Force and served five years as a fighter pilot based in the United States, Korea, Japan, and Thailand. He then completed a Master’s Degree before starting a teaching career. Because of his success as a teacher, he was encouraged to return to the University to begin a doctoral program. As a graduate student he worked as a teaching assistant in the program designed for prospective teachers of English.
