Sign Up for Summer Reading at Hickory Public Library Hickory Public Library is preparing for Summer Reading, its special program for children up to age 18 during the summer school break. “Get a Clue @ Your Library” offers children the opportunity to have fun and improve their reading skills over the summer. Mysteries, puzzles, brainteasers and treasure hunts abound at the library this summer. The program includes reading, prizes and special events. Registration begins May 14 th and is ongoing through August 12 th. Children from birth to age 12 can register for “Get a Clue” and youth from 12 to 18 can sign up for “YNK @ Your Library”. The summer programs will feature: storytelling, puppets, magic, children’s theater, cooking classes, Harry Potter Party, 4 th of July Celebration, henna body art and two chocolate mystery programs. Children through age 12 can read, or be read to, and keep track of all books they read. Registered participants will be eligible for Crawdads baseball tickets, ice cream at McDonalds, a free meal at Bob Evans, books, and prize drawings. Those registered for the teen program will read books and email short reviews directly to the library’s website. Registered participants are eligible for Crawdads tickets, ice cram certificates, books, and a prize drawing. Summer Reading kicks off with “The Balloon Lady” on Tuesday, June 12 th. She will dazzle the audience with her creations at 10:30 a.m. at Ridgeview Branch Library and at 2:30 p.m. at Patrick Beaver Memorial Library. Friends of Hickory Public Library, Friends of Ridgeview Branch Library, and the City of Hickory are funding the Summer Reading Program. The State Library of North Carolina provides theme materials. Friends of the Library, Hickory Baseball, Bob Evans Restaurant, and McDonalds have donated prizes. Complete rules and schedules of activities are available at both libraries.
