Business Resources on NCLive are very helpful for researching business news, trends, company profiles, and statistics. Several business databases are accessible online by clicking on the Browse Resources Tab on the NCLive homepage.
That action returns the page below. Notice the default setting for accessing the databases is by Subject/Type. One could select to peruse the databases, alphabetically by title or by vendors. For this demo the Business Subject Category is selected.
The BusinessDatabases are below. All are FT and most are EZ (metasearch) searchable.
Selecting the ABI/Inform Complete option retrieves this page provided by the ProQuest vendor in which a BASIC search has placed for a sample search. The default assumes an AND connector so every record returned must contain those three words. See also the full text, date, database and language options. This vendor also allows limiting by scholarly journals and searching by category under the Topic Guide like a Directory. A partial list of the 115 results is seen below. The next view is Record # 15.
Let’s select a different Business database and examine its features. Hoover’s Company Capsules & Profiles from the Business category list on page 1 is below. This is an example of an Advanced Search in the same vendor, ProQuest.
The search terms in the fields above in the Hoover’s Company Capsules Profiles return:
The beginning of Record # 2 shows the type of financial information available on this company. The links and the options in the left panel provide a good overview.
The Kiplinger Finance& Forecasts database will be the last business database covered in this lesson. An Advanced Search is illustrated below using Boolean operators and nesting or grouping of terms (in parentheses) with searching done from left to right.
This search returned 338 articles, three of which are shown below. Notice the limiters that could have been selected to lessen the number of articles retrieved. The icons indicate which articles have abstracts, are full text and the printing formats available.
This is the first page of entry #2, Trouble in Paradise. The index terms and links at the left allow you to jump to all articles in this database having the same index term.
Don’t forget to take a look at the NC and regional business databases such as the one below. This is the homepage for the option, Economic Development Information System.
Though most databases have similar features and functions, be sure to use the Help buttons to learn about any variations, as needed. Downloading, printing, and emailing citations, information, or articles is possible on all the databases. Remember that a Publications List link, button, or tab (usually located on the homepage of a database) accesses the titles of the magazines, newspapers, and/or journals that the particular database indexes. For a broad and quick search one may use the EZ Search capability, which searches several databases in the NCLive virtual library simultaneously. Enter your search terms at the NCLive homepage and select how you want the keywords to be searched by using the “radio” buttons beneath the search box.
Below is only a portion of the “hits” that were returned by this search.
There are hundreds of results with this broad approach that may be helpful depending on your search query and need. This approach might be useful for topics or terms about which information might be hard to find or if you wish to have many possibilities from which to select for a research paper. Or perhaps you need a literature review on a topic. Be sure to check out all the NCLive Business databases and the many others as well. |
