Clinical Pharmacology is an NCLive database. It contains current information about prescription drugs, OTC products, herbal/nutritional supplements, and new or experimental drugs. Records retrieved may also be viewed in Spanish. Start at the NCLive homepage accessed by clicking on the links from the Hickory Public Library homepage. At the NCLive homepage below, click on the Browse Resources TAB.
You arrive at the Subject/Type access point by default but, click on the Alphabetic option and get to the page below. Next, scroll down to the database or click on the letter “C.”
From the alphabetized list of databases select Clinical Pharmacology and enter the site. Notice that is a Full Text (FT) database and it is accessible in any EZ meta-searches made from the NCLive homepage. Meta-searches search multiple databases simultaneously using keyword(s) or exact phrases.
The following page illustrates a Basic Search using the search query Zoloft and limiting the results to only FT articles. Note the other features available on this page. For example, you may expand your search in three different ways and also request images.
This search returns four FT records. See below. The last one is in Spanish. The first result has an icon in the entry that indicates the article has illustrations.
Let’s take a look at entry #1 and examine the record. The pull down menu has been left open to show what languages are available for translation. Although a partial page is shown, the full page does have photos of the packaging and of actual tablets of Zoloft.
Clinking on the English Version of the Patient Education Sheet retrieves the following. Note the two forms the drug may be administered, orally and by tablet.
We will examine the Drug Index Button located at the top of the search screens next. Click on the button and key in the name of the drug (aspirin here) you wish to research.
Clicking on the Browse Button retrieves the following page.
Select #1 of several available on aspirin and its variations. Click the Search button.
Seven entries on Aspirin, ASA are currently in the Clinical Pharmacology database.
Now let’s try an Advanced Search and use more than one concept. In this example pain and aspirin must appear in the record. Note Boolean searching (combination searching using AND, OR, NOT) is available. Terms may be designated to appear in specific fields (Drug Name, Subset, Title or Default) as a means to focus or refine your search.
The search above yields 2 returns.
A portion of the Drug Monograph (#1) follows. Immediately preceding the article is an overview with generic and brand names and a Link to Patient Education Sheet which is very useful for frequently asked questions regarding the drug including side effects, interactions with other medications, how to take the medicine, what to do if a dose is missed, etc. The Drug Monograph overview appears below.
The beginning of the Drug Monograph follows. Note the Contents panel to the left. As can be seen, this information is at the professional level.
The next page is the beginning of the Patient Education page. See the Contents sidebar for the types of frequently asked questions (FAQ) addressed in this patient education page. The information is aimed toward the concerns of the average user.
