This tutorial will investigate the NCLive Health and Medicine database NC Health Info.

Linking to the NCLive site from the Hickory Public Library homepage or accessing it from home using a password, returns the page below. Click on the Browse Resources TAB to get the Alphabetic list option.

The four access points to the databases and sites, of which the Alphabetic TAB is one, are seen here. Click on the N to jump to list of resources beginning with the letter, “N.”

Select the NC Health Info from the alphabetized list to retrieve the site’s homepage.

This is a full text database but it is not accessible as EZ search at the NCLive homepage.

This is the homepage for NC Health Info including the terms, Allergy and CatawbaCounty in the pull down menus for a Quick Start search. A directory for community health service sites and a directory for information generated by the US Nat’l Library of Medicine and the Nat’l Institutes of Health are also available for searching by categories.

This is part of the page returned from our Quick Start search.Note the Page Contents.

The panel on the right allows you to link to quality information for related subjects in the MedlinePlus database generated by the aforementioned research institutions.

Selecting the option Sinusitis links us to the MedlinePlus page below, from which you may select further information by categories. Note the Spanish translator button and the many tabs available for further information to redirect or enhance your searching.

Using the “Back Arrow” button, go back to the previous NC Health Info community health services page. Select the Neighboring Counties link under the Expand Search option to widen your access to health/medicine websites.

Let’s try another category from the MedlinePlus database for practice. Select the Drug Information option on the homepage under the Find Health Information section.

You are linked to the page below from which you select the drug of interest by clicking on the first letter of the name of the drug (Z for Zoloft, for example). Note the late-breaking news, Clinical Trials, and MEDLINE research article links. Keyword searches are also possible on this page at the empty search box in the left hand upper corner.

This database is easy to use and has highly reliable information to assist you in your medical and health information needs.
