Filters
Filters allow limiting
search results independently of the query and determine how a query is applied.
Most search tools have filters. Some offer unique filters other tools don't
have. Use these when possible. Check to see what is offered at different search
tools. Here are some possible filter types:
- Anchor - Find pages containing the specified
word/phrase in a link.
- Applet - Find documents with applets
corresponding to the name provided.
- Date Filters - Useful for restricting
retrieval to documents modified since a certain date or within a range of
dates. Remember that the dates shown are generally the date the page was
indexed, not created.
- Depth - Retrieve additional pages from a
site and define the nested levels to retrieve.
- Document Types - Restrict retrieval to a
document type.
- Domain - Find documents restricted to the
specified domain.
- File/Media Types - Find documents that
contain the file/media type specified.
- Host - Find documents on a specified host.
- Images - Find documents with images
corresponding to the filename specified.
- Links - Find documents with links to the URL
specified.
- People Names - Find documents dealing with a
certain individual.
- Title - Find documents with the word/phrase
specified in the title.
- URL - Find documents whose URLs match the
word/phrase specified.
