Neigborhood College Program

What is Neighborhood College?

Nieghborhood College is a series of professionally led sessions designed to teach citizens about the City of Hickory and the services it provides.  It is an educational experience that will give participants insight into Hickory’s history and its governmental process.  Participants are encouraged to share the knowledge they receive from the program with their neighbors.  The program started in 1998 and more than 175 citizens have completed the course. 

Why Participate?

  • You will learn about your city’s government, how it works and how it impacts your community.
  • You will be able to take that knowledge back to your neighbors and have the ability to be an effective leader in your neighborhood.
  • You will be able to take this knowledge back to your business and when there are questions that you need answered from the city, you will know the right person to call.

Are You Eligible?

To be selected, you must be a resident or work in the City of Hickory and be willing to commit the time to this informative, interesting, and intense program.  However, the class is limited to 25 people. The City of Hickory will strive for diverse participation in this program.

What is the Cost?

There is no cost to citizens who attend the sessions.

What is Expected of Participants?

Participants must be willing to commit the time to attend the once a week sessions.   Each participant must earn a specified number of credits in order to be certified as having completed the program.

Program Calendar

The 2007 Neighborhood College class begins September 8th and ends November 18th. 

Application Process

If you are interested in attending, please submit applications to the City of Hickory Public Information Office by September 3, 2008. Applications can mailed to the attention of the Office of Communications, P.O. Box 398, Hickory, NC 28603 or faxed to 323-7550. The City of Hickory will select 20-25 participants who represent the diversity of the City.  Successful applicants will be mailed a detailed calendar for the program after they have been chosen.  Any questions, call (828) 261-2222.
