The City of Hickory is a community of approximately 40,212 located in the foothills of Northwestern, North Carolina. The Hickory Metropolitan area is one of the largest in the state. The city limits cover an area of approximately 33 square miles. Hickory is known for its high quality furniture, fiber optical and coaxial cable manufacturing, medical professional services and a community for senior adults to call their home. Hickory was honored to receive for a third time the “All America City” award in 2007. Previous awards were in 1967 and 1987. Hickory is the core city for a four county area known as the Unifour.
The Hickory Police Department is a full service municipal police agency comprised of 140 fulltime coworkers. The department handled over 45,700 calls for services for citizens in 2006. The department operates under a philosophy of community based policing. The department's mission statement is: HPD is committed to providing the highest quality of police service to our customers: the citizens of and visitors to our city. Dedicated to improving the quality of life in our city, our department will work in partnership with our community to provide a high degree of effective and efficient public safety while maintaining respect for cultural diversity and individual rights and dignity.
