The Victim Services Coordinator is a civilian position assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division and reports directly to the division commander. The Victim Services Coordinator oversees and coordinates victim services activities for the entire police department and manages the volunteer and policing program.
The Victim Services Coordinator serves a vital function within the police department and provides an important and much needed service to the citizens of and visitors to our city who fall victim to crime by:
- Conducting needs assessment for victims of crime
- Providing initial counseling to crime victims
- Training and working with co-workers to continuously improve the services provided to victims
- Informing victims of available services with processing of compensation claims, and when appropriate, referring the victim to local, state, and federal support groups and other professional agencies
- Explaining to the victim the criminal justice system and informing them of their rights under the law
- Preparing the victim for court proceedings and accompanying them to court while providing pertinent information and appropriate support
Being the victim of a crime can be an extremely traumatic experience to overcome, even when the offender is arrested and successfully prosecuted. HPD’s Victim Services Coordinator helps the victims of crime as well as their family find the path to recovery and regain control of their lives.
