You Can Help Hickory Put Solid
Waste In Its Place! Each year, Hickory residents
generate more than 18,000 tons of garbage. Last
year, Hickory reduced its landfilled waste by 27% through
your recycling efforts. Thanks to strong community
support and your participation, Hickory continues to be
a state-recognized leader in recycling and waste reduction!
Today, Hickory offers many recycling and waste reduction
opportunities at home and at work. You can continue
to make a difference by practicing these simple habits. REDUCE
when you throw away; REUSE items that would otherwise go
into the trash can, and RECYCLE HICKORY STYLE!
CURBSIDE RECYCLING IN HICKORY
Single family residents should place any
recyclables in their blue recycling bin. Place the bin at the curb by 6:00 A.M. on the same day as garbage
collection.
No. 1 and No. 2 Plastic Drink Bottles
Rinse, remove lids.
Glass Food and Drink Containers
Green, Brown and clear glass only
Rinse and remove all lids
Newspapers, Magazines, Catalogs, Phonebooks
Do not place in plastic or paper bags
Aluminum and Metal Cans
Drink, beer, food and juice cans only
Rinse and remove all lids
NEED A BIN REPLACEMENT OR A SECOND BIN?
Call the Recycling office at 323-7500 with
your name, address and telephone number. New bins are delivered
each week by Recycling personnel.
PROBLEMS WITH COLLECTION?
Please notify the Recycling office immediately
at 323-7439 should you experience problems with collection. Should
your bin ever be missed, let us know so that we may immediately
investigate. Please do not remove your bin from the curb until
service occurs.
MULTI-FAMILY RECYCLING IN HICKORY
Large apartment, condominium and townhouse
complexes are equipped with drop-off centers for recyclables. Residents
may take recyclables to these centralized containers at any time.
Recyclables should be separated into the specially marked containers.

Leaves, grass clippings, tree limbs, shrubbery
trimmings.
Hickory residents recycle over 7,000,000 pounds of yard
waste each year. The City of Hickory collects your yard
waste and recycles it into something useful - mulch and
compost. Yard waste is collected curbside once a week on
the same day your recyclables and garbage are collected.
Please prepare it as follows:
Bag it!
Use heavy duty clear plastic bags
Limb piles exceeding 2 cubic yards (pickup truck quantity) must be scheduled for collection by calling 828-323-7500.
Yard waste bags may be purchased at the
Public Services Complex located at 1441 9th Avenue Northeast.
Can it!
Containers must not exceed 33 gallons and
must be marked "YARD WASTE"
HICKORY'S COMPOST AND MULCH
Take advantage of the opportunity to purchase
mulch and compost at the City's Yard Waste Compost Facility in
Northeast Hickory on Cloninger Mill Road, just off Sandy Ridge
Road and Highway 127N. Call the Recycling office at 828-323-7500 for
hours of operation and prices!
SPECIAL HANDLING
(Bulky tree debris and large quantities)
Large quantities (over a pickup load) of tree debris and yard waste require the use of special equipment
to be transported to the Yard Waste Compost Facility.
To schedule collection of these materials, please call
the Public Services Complex at 323-7500.
LARGE APPLIANCE (WHITE GOODS) RECYCLING
Used appliances are collected curbside each
week. To schedule collection, please call the Public Services Complex
at 323-7500 one week in advance.
COLLECTION FOR THE PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED
Special back door service is available for
citizens who require assistance. To request back door service,
please call the Public Services Complex at 323-7500.
